Shelby and the Shell That Finally Fit
Shelby loved his shell, but his shell had stopped loving him back, and he was too scared to leave the only home he had ever known. Shelby loved his shell that no longer fit. His reef glowed with anemones, pebbles, and light. Shelby squeezed in tight, and it always hurt.
Other crabs wore shells that still fit. Dark clouds rolled over the calm turquoise reef. Waves crashed hard, and Shelby curled in tighter.
The old home cracked, leaving him exposed. Alone in the dark, he had no shell. An old octopus drifted close, calm and wise.
She showed him a row of empty shells. Every shell here belonged to someone braver. Trembling, he let the old shell go.
